The Route

Kochi to Munnar (130 km, 4 hours) ascends into the Western Ghats. Munnar to Thekkady (55 km, 1.5 hours) descends through cardamom plantations into the Periyar Tiger Reserve zone. The scent of fresh cardamom through the cab window on this descent is something guests consistently mention in reviews

55 km — approximately 1.5 hours through the Kumily cardamom ghat. The road is in good condition. The descent through spice plantations is one of the best road stretches in Kerala.

Yes — the 6:30am slot is the most reliable for elephant sightings on the lakeshore. We pre-book this for all guests. Tiger sightings from the boat are rare — do not plan this primarily as a tiger safari.
